meteor that almost hit earth

i was getting my nails done the other day when i first heard on the news about the meteor that almost hit earth and destroyed it the other day.... i have since been trying to find out more about it but haven't been able to find articles more than a paragraph long about it. what's the deal? and also why did nobody tell people that this thing was coming if it was gonna potentially destroy us all? they must have detected it. but then again, maybe they didn't tell everyone on purpose, cuz i mean wtf would anyone do lol
